Well, here's another new CD from an artist you not have heard, but maybe you have, since she's from Cleveland (yes, Burghers, good thing do come out of Cleveland. Sometimes.)
If you haven't heard her, you're in for a treat when you do. If you have, you already know what I mean.
Mary Bridget Davies is a powerful blues and soulful singer, and her new CD, "Wanna Feel Somethin'," is glorious testimony to her vocal talents.
The album opens on a very high note -- "Your Kinda Love" is a tough, blues-burner that grabs you right from the first notes; Davies' potent pipes pumping furiously. The rest of the CD won't give you a breather.
"Same Ol' Blues" is a soulful, torchy ode to meaningless love. "Gettin' Stronger" is guitar and distortion driven gem that makes tender-tough vocals a counterpoint to the raunchy guitar behind her. "Trick the Devil" is another rough blues that pays tribute to develishly old-fashioned blues. The CD ends with a pair of surprisingly jazzy efforts -- "Wonderwall" and "Thunder and Lightnin'," although the latter is tough enough.
My favorite track, though, among all this soul and blues, is a luminous organ-guided ride through the Eagles' classic "Take it to the Limit" -- Davies starts traditionally enough, but builds the song into a powerful version, soaring into soulful heights the Eagles never quite reached. As much as I like the original, I love Davies' masterful take.
If you have a chance to catch her, do it. You won't be disappointed.
Here's a video of a live performance of two of the songs from this CD:
