ABC introduced “Disney’s Prep & Landing” two years ago and it resonated as one of the more creative new Christmas specials. And why not? John Lasseter of Pixar fame is one of the executive producers of these stories of elves from the North Pole who help pave the way for Santa’s annual one-night deliveries.
The she’s primary prep and landing crew, Wayne (voice of Dave Foley, “NewsRadio”) and Lanny (Derek Richardson, "Men in Trees"), are back in a new half-hour special, “Naughty vs. Nice” (8:30 tonight, WTAE). This time viewers are introduced to the less genteel “coal Elves” who are charged with leaving a lump of coal – actually a note encouraging better behavior – in the stockings of naughty girls and boys. Wayne and Lanny get teamed with a Coal Elf (voice of Rob Riggle, "The Daily Show") to retrieve the device and set things right.
The “Prep & Landing” programs are filled with creative notions about the work of Santa’s elves, from the name of a new character Noel to a Christmas ornament-shaped aerial tram. There’s no reason new adventures couldn’t continue for years to come. Even if that’s not Disney’s intent, here’s hoping ABC can get one more new special out of this franchise. It may never rise to the level of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” or “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” but the “Prep & Landing” shows remain the best Christmas specials to come along in a couple of decades.
