Turned on my radio the other morning and got nothing by dead air on 1250 ESPN.
''Good,'' I thought. ''As a public service the station was carrying dead air instead of Colin Cowherd.''
No such luck. The station had a temporary loss of signal or some electronic malfunction and it actually happened during ''Mike and Mike.''
Cowherd, though, is a reason to remove 1250 ESPN from your pre-set buttons. Don't want to even take a chance on having to hear him. It's impossible to determine what drives the public's listening habits, but Cowherd is just plain terrible. He wouldn't be any good on a local station but here he is a national success. I don't get it.
Here are some figures I've obtained from a reliable source as to why the 1250 ESPN is going out of business.
''In the past two years the station went from billing just under $3 million (in advertising) to around $1.4 million, which means losses went from around $500,000 to about $2.5 million.''
Those are staggering losses and there was no turnaround in sight. Easy to see why the move was made.
The station was losing money even when Mark Madden was driving significantly higher ratings. Makes you wonder if The Fan can make a go of it in the long haul, although I hear the station is doing quite well in terms of advertising.

Cowherd, though, is a reason to remove 1250 ESPN from your pre-set buttons.
I don't get it either. I really enjoy Cowherd and am a faithful reader of Smizik's blog. Love your sense of humor, Bob!
Kornheiser's ESPN show from 10 to 1 was the best ever on radio. -- Bob Smizik
That works for streaming live (although without support for multitasking), but it doesn't seem to include podcasts, which is what I really want. When it comes to the Internet, CBS lags way behind the rest of the media industry for some reason.

Agreed, he stinks.
Cowherd is nothing more than a product of ESPN. If he wasn't forced to be carried then he would sink into oblivion faster than a Meek fastball.
