Nothing like a little in-fighting among college coaches to spice the day. Bret Bielema, long-time Big Ten coach, is not happy with the recruiting tactics of Urban Meyer, new to the Big Ten. Most likely outcome of this squabble: Bielema will have to get used to it. That comes from no less an authority that Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez, who has no problem with Meyer's recruiting tactics.

So this is what it has come to. After 60-plus days on the job at Ohio State, there’s no avoiding it.

Either the Big Ten bows to Urban Meyer, or Urban Meyer bows to the Big Ten.

“I can tell you this,” says Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema. “We at the Big Ten don’t want to be like the SEC—in any way, shape or form.”

Just so we’re clear: Bielema wasn’t talking about winning national championships. He was talking about Meyer’s recruiting tactics—and how after a little more than two months on the job, Meyer already is getting under the skin of his colleagues.

Recruiting is probably a lot like the process of making laws and making sausage.

Non event-- I would rather hear about Pitt basketball.

Bielema is the guy who hung 82 points on Indiana last season. He had his starters still playing late into the fourth quarter.

And, this clown talks about mutual respect among Big Ten coaches. What a fraud!

There is no honor among thieves, or coaches for that matter. Soon the Big 10 will be like the SEC, not an honorable man to be found.

Bret Bielema could construct a fence around Wisconsin, like Dave Wannstedt did with western Pennsylvania.

I came upon this story on ESPN.com. Apparently, Meyer had a chat in Chicago about his recruiting methods with the league commissioner and others.
When push came to shove, there was nothing "illegal" about Meyer's methods. And,this "gentleman's agreement" about Big 10 coahces not to recruit kids who verbal to another school within the conference doesn't exist.

All of the conference head football coaches attended this session except the new Penn State coach -- which might be one of the key reasons why most of the Nits' top verbal recruits will be playing for Meyer next fall.

Saying that recruiting other teams' verbal recruits is an SEC thing is pretty silly. I wonder if Bielema is p****d off at Rutgers for signing JJ Denman who had verbally committed to Wisconsin.

Just a thought, but a better approach to the recruiting situation might be:

1) No verbal commits by students.
2) Schools can only make official offers during Jan 1-15
3) Blackout period from Jan 16-31, allowing the recruit time to contemplate the decision. offers made during Jan 1-15 can only be rescinded in the event the recruit gets in trouble after Jan 1.
4) LOI day remains Feb 1. Any recruit who does not sign on that day may not be contacted until they either sign with a school or graduate from HS.
5) Student athletes who have not chosen a school by Feb 1 may visit a school on their own, but may not have any contact with members of the Athletic Dept or boosters, etc. Only the school's admission dept, financial aid, etc.

Schools would be forced to only offer as many scholarships as they have available. Unused scholarships could be offered following graduation.

Seems like a lot of sour grapes from Bielema. I think that, when it comes to the cut-throat recruiting that goes on and a "gentlemen's agreement", he'd be wise to heed this quote from "Rounders":

"Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker."

Utah, that is a classic quote. Well done.

No surprise here. A "normal" person would probably tread lightly when his school is on PROBATION and another infraction would lead to the DEATH PENALTY.

But we're talking Ohio $tate here, where the players get free tats from drug dealers ( but no drugs involved... or lets not look there ) - and the coaches, administration and fans believe they are above any NCAA rule.

I agree with the comment that Bielema shows little if any class himself. His team could be ahead 60-0 in the final quarter and he would want to make it 70-0. Guys like that I tune out when they start talking about ethical issues. Buy a mirror Coach.

I wonder if 40 years from now there will be Sub-Urban Meyer Library on the OSU campus. He seems like that kinda guy. He'd be happy to donate a million or two from his salary to promote the Classics.

Pressuring kids to break a committment is unethical, end of discussion. Doesn't matter who else is doing it, doesn't matter that it makes you a "champion."

Whatever we are talking about, if it concerns a minor under 18 in the United States, it is not good. I think the only reason we have kids in this country is to make our pathetic lives seem better by ruining another's who is weaker than us. The only reason they exist is to be exploited. About 5-10% of parents are able to protect their children from this.

LOL. Sounds like Bielema is a big baby. I get what the guy is saying, but I mean going to the media and blubbering like a baby about it doesn't make you look like much of a gentleman either...If he doesn't like it steal one of Urban's and send a message, don't cry like a sissy.

@RickJ, Great Point, I wish I thought of that myself... The guy seriously has no shame beating the living daylights out of a team 70-0 and cry's because Urban talks to a recruit, Lol. Urban could probably steal his gf/wife if he felt like it too, maybe Brett is just scared.

Funny how elements in the cosmos seek their own level. Obviously, Meyer has found his own level at Ohio State, of all of the Big Ten schools there is not a better match of "win at all costs" philosophies than that between Meyer and that University.

Meyer brings the SEC tradition of anything goes, to a school that already has been practicing that tradition. It's a match made in Heaven. The words "Gentlemens Agreement" have absolutely no meaning to Meyer or to Ohio State for that matter, the rest of the Big Ten had better get used to that.
