The cloud that hangs over the Super Bowl success of Bill Belichick's time with the New England Patriots won't be erased by a win Sunday. But it will help validate Belichick's legacy.

Bill Reiter, FoxSports.com

Sunday will mark Bill Belichick's fifth Super Bowl as a head coach — but make no mistake, it is by far the most important for his legacy.

Because while a Patriots win would produce the Hoodie's fourth title, it also would help cleanse the perceived stain, in some corners, of his other three — just as a loss would keep his legacy smudged with the dirt of Spygate.

In other words, what's also at stake Sunday is the legitimacy of everything Belichick has done as an NFL coach.

And that is why I hope with all my heart that the Giants win on Sunday, besides the fact that the Maras and Rooneys are in-laws.

The cheating of the Hoodie and the Pats is every bit as egregious as that of Bonds, McGuire and the slew of others in baseball. It struck at the heart of the integrity of the game.

However, since the game is also a billion dollar industry, and a religion, the evidence had to be burned, even when this same action in a legal proceeding is called obstruction of justice.

Hoodie is a cheater. Nothing about the outcome of Sunday will alter that fact.

The AFC was incredibly weak this year, which is why the Steelers collapse is so frustrating to me. The Ravens made the AFC Championship game, that is all you have to say. The Giants should embarass the Patriots, especially the defense that the "genius" Belichick has no idea how to fix. Hopefully they can catch a shot of Brady crying at some point in the game too.

The Patriots are the weakest AFC team to get to the super bowl since the Raiders fluke season of 2003. They really have no business being in this game, there probably aren't 2 players on their defense that could play for the Steelers or the Ravens.

By all rights Bellicheat and Brady should get thumped. Coughlin, though, will probably play it very conservative, which could be a fatal mistake. The Giants cannot be in a position where one or two bad calls give the game to Brady. Because you know Brady will get those calls.

Really, Mr. Reiter? I'll stake my solid reputation as a highly regarded and expert couch-coach on the carefully considered proposition that Belichick couldn't care less about his reputation outside of that held by his boss and the fans that help pay his salary. It's all about winning, and winning is all about the money--or didn't you know that?

Wake up! "Just win baby!" isn't a definition of success limited to the now-deceased Al Davis, it's what the NFL (and all professional sports) is all about.

(And if Mr. Goodell had any sense of decency, he'd vacate the Patriots tainted championships and make Kraft give back the trophies.)

Who needs to cheat when you got Bill O'Brien calling the shots?

Belichick and Brady need only to follow the script.

I feel like the JFK and other conspiracy theories that enough time has passed....and there are enough people out there who would love to make a name for themselves....that the Bellicheat believers are now out of gas.

When the Steelers were winning all the SBs in the 70s, haters were on the steroid issue, that the Steelers were drugged up.

I hate the Patriots, hope they lose but if they win welcome, Bill and Tom, to the 4 win Chuck and Terry club.

I think even Bil Walsh didn't get four...I think it was the other guy who followed.

Hopind Eddie D Jr gets in the HOF today. He really make something of the 49ers. Of course, naysayers say he used his checkbook like a sledge hammer in the pre-cap days and then got caught cheating with the cap.

The Raiders crushed everyone that year! That was no fluke. Heck if there was a fluke this decade it was the '07 Giants and the '05 Steelers.

You'd think the Steelers' record over the last 15 years was the same as the Pirates with all the whining their fans do. Wahhhh Spygate! Wahhhh Bruce Arians! Wahhh Dick LeBeau! Wahhh Ike Taylor!

The cheating of the Hoodie and the Pats is every bit as egregious as that of Bonds, McGuire and the slew of others in baseball. It struck at the heart of the integrity of the game.

You just obviously don't know what the heck Spygate even was apparantly. And it's McGwire.

On to the subject in hand..the fact that the cheating evidence was destroyed speaks volumes.

Ask Barry Bonds how much all of his post-steroid-testing home runs helped his legacy?

Not much...

Let me say two things about the Super Bowl tomorrow that (unfortunately) includes the NE Patriots:

1) Anyone that thinks that Bill Belichick does not continue to cheat, must have been born the day before yesterday. Once a cheater...Always a cheater.
Belichick was (at the most) slapped on the wrist by owner Bob Kraft's best friend....The Sultan of Surly....Roger Goodell.
Goodell proceeded to burn the evidence, and turn his attention to more important (?) matters like how James Harrison tackles an opponent running with the ball.
Brady, Belichick, Kraft and Goodell are scheisters from the word go.
Keep in mind....They don't have a CBS Scene Restaurant & Bar in Gillette Stadium by mistake.
Technology has progressed to the point where Big Bill doesn't need to plant a goon in the stands to steal signals anymore.
Hacking, wacking, chiseling and analyzing are all in his merry bag of tricks.
"Football Researcher" Ernie Adams mysteriously stands at Belichick's side during practices. Football Researcher indeed!
I believe him to be "Head Analyst of Lifted Opponents Game Plans"...
Belichick cheated several years ago, he cheated a few weeks ago, and he'll cheat tomorrow. Like alot of things....Most of the time it works....Sometimes it doesn't.

2) Win or lose, nothing will "make up" for the loss the Pats were dealt on 2/3/08. That is a date that will live in infamy.
Imagine the lifetime highlight films we would have to endure of Brady and his merry band of cheaters completing a perfect season?
It didn't happen....And a win tomorrow will not "make up" for that glorious day a few years ago.
...
written by Dan1283, February 04, 2012 - 02:15 PM
Daquido, if it's so easy to cheat and win and not get caught like you say, and you say that Belichick cheated yesterday and will cheat today tomorrow next week and next year, then how naive are you to believe that the Patriots are the only ones doing it?

No team with the 31st ranked defense, a wide receiver playing at defensive back and their best receiver with a gimpy leg should win the Super Bowl.

The Giants should win this game by at least 10 points. However, if the Giants give the ball away as the Ravens did, the Pats will win. The Ravens choked away the game.

The Pats will not beat themselves. They hang around on defense and allow the other team to beat themselves. That is their only chance against the superior Giants.

This is a Giants team that lost to the Redskins twice, the Seahawks, one of the worst road teams ever, at home, and the Vince Young-led Eagles They're a good team but let's not lose sight and call them a GREAT team. This is still a defense that gave up 121 points three weeks in a row to the Saints, Packers, and Cowboys in the November-December part of their schedule. Don't think the Patriots offense isn't licking their chops at a chance to go after that pass defense.

As long as the Patriots don't have a debacle on the offensive line this is going to be a much tighter game than people are saying. I think it's going to be higher scoring than the 2007 Super Bowl too. I expect the Patriots to be leading this game late again. What happens from there is anyone's guess, though.

written by Jackagain, February 04, 2012 - 02:40 PM
This is exactly why I'm rooting against the Pats. If they win, pundits will say that the earlier cheating meant nothing.

If the NFL and sports writers would only admit that knowing another teams every play gives a team a huge advantage, I wouldn't care who wins this game.

Belachick is the best coach the NFL has ever seen and the Stiller lemmings are just jealous. The guy is innovative, commands respect of his players & is a proven winner. If The Jaw (Cowher) had been to as many Souper Bowls, he would have been canonized in Pittsburgh.

BTW: Joe Green looks HORRIBLE. He should shave. What the hell does he know about offensive football anyway. He is a failed coach who had to come groveling back to Rooney to get a job to stay out of the poorhouse.

I hate the Patriots. I could care less about the Giants...come to think of it I hate every team in every sport from NY City.

I don't understand all the support for the Giants. Who cares? If the Steelers aren't involved it's just two teams playing a game of football and I couldn't give a rat's rear end who wins.

That being said, the Patriots will win this game. The odds against the Giants repeating their against-all-odds march to a SB in 2007 is incredibly high. It just ain't going to happen.

Happened to watch on NFL network a special called "A Coaches Life" it was all about Bill.

When I finished watching I had to take a shower.

The Patriots are the antithesis of the Steelers.

Yeah they both win but it's much more appealing the way the Steelers carry out their business.

I am so looking forward to:

* The Giants destroying the Patriots tomorrow.

* Brady flying through the air as if hit by a car after getting rocked by the Giants front four -- repeatedly.

* Brady whining at the officials after every hit.

* Wes Welker doing his flag dance after every incomplete pass -- while hoping the zebras don't cave and give in to his incessant, childish whining.

* The so called "ready to go" Gronkowski doing nothing.

* Shots of that pink shirted tub of goo Kraft in his luxury box, mouth agape with visible chunks of Jeno's Pizza Rolls, Triscuits, spray can cheese and every other piece of fattening, disgusting food he can shove in his bloated mug -- as he realizes his "dynasty" is finished and incapable of winning a Super Bowl since his organization was caught cheating.

* Shots of a stone faced Belichick as his hopes of validating his reputation are crushed in front of his very eyes as tens of millions of people watch -- each of every one thinking "he can't win without cheating."

* Every football fan of the other 31 teams beating down on those obnoxious Boston fans -- especially the ones who said Spygate didn't matter.

I don't want the Giants to beat New England. I want them to humiliate them. I just hope everything breaks their way as the Patriots can roast in hell for eternity for all I care. Creeps.

@Jack

You're right, I had forgotten about that game. That was the week after the Steelers beat the Patriots. I found this interesting though, in an article from Pro Football Weekly:

Since that loss to the Giants on a 1-yard touchdown toss from QB Eli Manning to TE Jake Ballard with 15 seconds to go, the Patriots have gone on a 10-game tear in which they've outscored their foes, 359-188, their average margin of victory during that stretch 17.1 points.

I'm looking forward to the game but could not care less who wins.

not really. he's already in the legendary category. like him or not...i do...he's one of the best coaches in the history of the league. he gets the most out of his players and hasn't always had the best talent. i also like coughlin. a completely different style but he manages to get the job done. it should be a very good game tomorrow. however, if there's the potential for a blowout, its going to be the pats doing the damage. the giants are going to have to get pressure on brady and they should be able to do that. woodland hills favorite tight end is going to be ready to play but watch out for welker and if the giants can;t get to brady, he's going to pick them apart.

The Patriots use every advantage that they can, such as manipulating the scoreboard to mess up Bill Cundiff kicking the tying field goal. Let's face it, that's legal but it's sneaky and that's part of the game and being a great coach. Really that attention to detail is what makes Belichek so good.

Now, the Super Bowl coverage is getting really crazy. Tomorrow NBC is having coverage ALL day. I read an article about, I am not making this up, Tom Brady's toilet. It's a magnificent plumbing fixture, which opens and closes its own lid, has a bidet, a seat warmer, an mp3 player and I can't remember but it might even talk. It was described as the Cadillac Escalade of toilets. That's real luxury there.

It says to let go of Spygate in your assessment of the man.
