Some may rememeber Scott Kaplan as a kicker at Pitt in the late 80s and early 90s. He led three mediocre teams in scoring. Kaplan went on to talk radio and carved out a nice career, first on a fledgling national network and later as a host in San Diego with former Chargers star Bill Ray Smith.

That began unraveling last month when he made, to say the least, out-of-line comments about a female announcer. He was fired this week and -- calling himself ``a moron'' -- took the blame for his incredible blunder.

By Brent Schrotenboer, San Diego Union-Tribune

Sports radio host Scott Kaplan said he made “stupid” comments about a female broadcaster on his show last month and that he wants to apologize to her for it because it’s the right thing to do.

The comments led to his firing on Monday from XX Sports Radio. He had spent the last 11 years as co-host of a popular morning sports talk show with former Chargers linebacker Billy Ray Smith.

“Nobody is telling me to say this, “ Kaplan said in an interview Wednesday with UT San Diego. “We’re not in L.A.. We’re not in New York. I didn’t bring anybody with me here. I don’t have a team of publicists. I don’t have a high-priced attorney, you know? I’m a regular guy who is living a regular little existence in San Diego, trying my best to every day go on the radio and make people laugh and have a good time.''

If his comments were salsa, they would be labled "Mild." Rude, yes, but mild.

Doesn't Ron Burgundy also work in San Diego? Perhaps Scott Kaplan can land a job on his newscast.

He who by me shall not be named, has survived in Pittsburgh making misogynistic comments, and saying he was sorry Ted Kennedy did not live long enough for . . . you know the reast, without, as far as I recall, apologizng.

So, I think that Kaplan's mea culpa many help him land another job in that market.

He sounds like a shock jock, who, as they all eventually do, say something stupid or out of line.

If I remember it right, the station manager (after hearing the remark) made Madden apologize shortly later that same day on the broadcast. The station manager dished out no further punishment.

It wasn't until the higher-ups at ESPN heard about what Madden said from a listener, they had him terminated.

Scott Kaplan is an idiot! At least Joe Namath was drunk when he insulted Suzy Kolber. Kaplan can't even use that as an excuse.

@ BIPOLARMAN "If Kaplan had made those comments about a man, nobody would have given them a second thought. Lighten up, ladies."

Men don't have their appearance commented on, generally.

You don't get it, obviously. Maybe you ought to think about how you would like for your sisters, daughters, nieces and so on to be so insulted. And historically had less desirable employment opportunities than men did, although much progress has been made.

Total knucklehead. After he kicked a field goal against Penn State in the late 80s or early 90s in a game at Pitt Stadium, he did a dance on the field with fists pumping and hips gyrating. My friends and I were like, "look at that idiot kicker."

Bill Osborne, who was the holder, grabbed him by the jersey and made him stop.

That is the only reason I remember him.

About a decade ago, Pitt was playing football and South Bend, and a Pitt receiver (forgot his name) caught a ball over the middle and immediately fell to the ground with an irish defender real close to him. The Irish radio color analyst (also forgot his name) made a comment that it looked like he (the receiver) was shot. The analyst was fired for that remark. At least IMO there was more substance for Kaplan to be axed than this guy ... but one must be responsible for what he says.

Bayou,

If "it" is the notion that women are too fragile to hear and handle those kinds of comments, then I believe "it" is a lie that I don't want to "get."

Why was it important to mention that Pitt was mediocre at the time he was kicking for them? I don't see how that is relevant to the story.

Scott Kaplan was in one of my classes at Pitt in the early 90s. I remember him as being very outgoing and am not surprised he ended up in broadcasting.

Kaplan has been in the industry for years and should have known what would happen. This was a lot worse than the Tony Kornheiser-Hannah Storm incident. You cannot say on the air that you think a woman was born a man and get away with it.

I still dont think he should have been fired. Suspended yes, but not fired. Hopefully he learns from this and someday gets another gig.

Not that it matters, but its not as if Andrea Lloyd is some horribly disfigured creature. She does a decent enough job as an analyst and didnt deserve this. This whole episode was a disaster for both her and Kaplan.

Typical radio idiot but his biggest mistake was to apologize- he (like most sports talk guys) are paid to be jerks, once they melt under the heat & issue some crap apology, they are toast.

I think its crucial to the story to mention Pitt was mediocre- sets a proper origin story for the main character

at best what scott kaplan did was ungentlemanly, uncivil, unprofessional and cowardly but at least he can admit he was wrong to say what he did.

His job is to entertain on the air. Part of that is being provocative. Another part of his job, however, is to avoid seriously offending his potential audience. It's perhaps a tough line to walk, but that's the job. If he made a remark that created a strong negative reaction, then that renders him incapable of performing his job of pulling in listeners and advertisers, and the station was right to fire him.
In a year or so, when the controversy is behind him, his value as an entertainer will outweigh the diminished controversy, and he'll get a job again. That's just how the marketplace works.

Well, not entirely the same thing, David. Kaplan was joking about a TV broadcaster -- someone who makes their living as an on-air personality. While it's no surprise that Kaplan got in trouble, it does raise a double standard of women in broadcasting.

There are a lot of women in TV broadcasting who had no experience and -- debatably -- little talent but have carved out years of lucrative employment based soley on their (good) looks. Jenn Brown of ESPN was literally a swimsuit model before becoming one of the network's top sideline reporters. We could easily come up with a list of a dozen or dozens of similar broadcasters who skate by because of their looks. In all seriousness, how many male sports reporters can you name that had modeling careers before they turned to broadcasting?

Unfortunately for the woman that Kaplan insulted, these beauty-before-brains female reporters have poisoned the water for other female reporters. They diminish the tenuous legitimacy of women in sports broadcasting and make evaluations of their looks fair game.

Like I said, it's no shock that the station would fire Kaplan to avoid a PR backlash. But I think a female sports reporter's looks are fair game for commentary. And anyone who doesn't like that can just look at Erin Andrews, Ines Sainz, Jenn Sterger, etc. for a reason why.

All that said, Jenn Brown sure is pertay....

It never ceases to amaze me how many of these guys sailing through life in the catbirds seat just can't keep their big mouths shut, or should I say can't keep their disparaging thoughts to themselves. They have to blurt them out for all the world to hear, and it usually costs them their job, or at the very least a stiff reprimand.

Kaplan isn't the first to do it and I'm sure he won't be the last. In our politically correct society how do these guys think they are going to get away with comments like Kaplan made, if they would just stop and think a minute, they could save themselves untold grief.
