No one in sports journalism, perhaps no one anywhere, has worked harder to point out the travesty that is the BCS than Yahoo! Sports columnist Dan Wetzel, who's even written a book on the subject. Wetzel should be a happy man today. The death of the BCS is on the horizon.

By Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports

Of all the criticism lobbed at Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany through the years – and it’s been considerable – no one ever has said he wasn’t intelligent, pragmatic and, most important, politically savvy.

Delany was going to defend the controversial BCS until the moment he wasn’t. And at that point, he was going to run from it like the tire fire it is.

Delany understands the winds of change blowing through college football and that the likelihood he could hold off a playoff was remote, at best.

So now the death of the BCS is upon us. That much is certain.

Right now, there isn’t a single conference publicly supporting the current system. All that’s left are a few rogue holdouts among presidents, coaches and athletic directors, and not even Delany is among them.

Read the rest of the story.

College football playoffs AND downgraded bowl games? I'm not holding my breath on this one.

Andy... The Big Ten is at the very least the second most profitable conference in the NCAA and has more power than you can imagine. I pointed this proposal out earlier in the week, and many bloggers laughed at the idea.... But do not doubt for one second that the clout held by the Big Ten can't change the system and snuff out the BCS. It may not look exactly like this when it all goes down, but the winds of change are already blowing, and the Big Ten will continue to lead the way.

Just read this quote from Dulac:

"In five years as offensive coordinator, Bruce Arians said Tomlin never once questioned a call or ordered a play to be called, nor did he ever come to him and tell him to throw more or run more."

Maybe Art II has fired the wrong guy.

I'm getting excited reading this article. The BEST solution IMO is seeding it 1-8, the top 4 get home games in quarterfinals, top 2 get home games in semis and play the champ at the neutral site. If this happens I see college football moving squarely into the #2 most popular sports entity in the US behind the NFL. Get it done.

This is utterly meaningless and still doesn't solve the big problem. Oh, sure, having a playoff is a much fairer way of deciding a champion than the ridiculous system that's in place now.....

.....BUT.....

...it does not solve the problem of the NFL having a free minor league system in the form of college football. Does not solve the problem of "student"/athletes who have no business taking up classroom space from legitimate students. Won't stop the problem of those same "student"/athletes having others do their schoolwork for them. Won't solve the problem of these "student"/athletes going to school for free when a great deal of them can barely even read and write at the 8th grade level. Won't stop boosters, ridiculous coaching contracts (and their subsequent ship jumping like the former Pitt coach).

In fact, this doesn't even really address the true problem at all. It's utterly amazing how so many people, who are probably fairly intelligent and mean nothing but good on everything else, are willing to turn their head and bury it in the sand when it comes to being entertained by football.

They shouldn't even have teams...colleges are about learning....not playing sports. And as a baseball and hockey fan I say the same thing for those sports, too. I stick to my guns and principles....how many here actually do?

The more of a true playoff they make it, the better. As many teams as possible. Play to win the championship, not play and posture to get to a championship game.

Max, you and I don't always see eye to eye, but on this issue, I have to agree. Who was the HC, or was there one?

That is a funny comment. I had always assumed that you had to actually be leading the way to continue to lead the way. As Wetzel noted, Delaney was going to defend the BCS until he couldn't do it anymore. And just two months ago Delaney was still publicly opposed to any kind of a playoff. And the Big10 is the last BCS conference to stop defending the status quo. Basically, Delaney and the Big 10 have been dragged, kicking and screaming, out of their comfortable cocoon.

Agreed.

The only thing that could be possibly worse than a 7-5 team winning the NC, would be to have it almost like a beauty contest, where the "best" gets voted to be "champion" by a bunch of biased idiots. Or perhaps the top two voted "prettiest" battling it out in a fictional NC game.

Oh wait...

SteelIrish33, have you seen the price of tuition? Trust me, they don't need the money. I know...I work at a college. $25,000 times 17,000 plus students....do the math and please explain to me how they are broke?

Higher education is just that: EDUCATION...these sports programs were all just club sports on the perimeter at the beginning. There's no legitimate reason or no legal reason that college's should be free farm systems for professional sports leagues. Just once try to remove the fan bias from your reasoning.

As much as I'd like to see it happen, I do not think the people pulling the strings in college football will allow the bowl system to be replaced by a playoff format. (I'd like to see playoff games held at the various bowls but that's probably too simplistic a solution.) Ultimately, they'll find a way to create another BCS.

Why stop at college? No more high school and middle school sports...right? Let kids play recreation leagues.....most sports except football have them. Pay your own way or fund raise. No tax money spent on school sports...just for learning...right?

amen, Amen, AMEN!!!!!!!!!

WV's Luck is right - no more blind support of someone else's pocket book (especially the bowl promoters/organizers - what an ugly scam it has turned into!).

I support a play-off similar to what gus-johnson is suggesting - If you can't find #1 in the top 8 teams, well then fagetaboutit.

Just heard the Bucs are trying to trade for AJ Burnett from the Yanks. MLB Network says the BMTIS is being "aggresive." Now they'll have the 5th best rotation in the NL Central.

16 team playoff is perfect and eliminate one out of conference game for each team. However, you are still going to have major crying by teams who are left out of the 16 teams. But it would be an improvement.

96 teams should be involved in an elimination tournament. That way they can say everyone has a chance to win it when in reality only three teams do. I hope ESPN will be happy. I stopped watching them when they became the dunking highlights network show.

What cracks me up is the as long as the Rose Bowl is still tied to the Big Ten.
Gimme a break, the same people who are in charge of this are the same people who have been in charge for too long already.
Ohio State only cares about Ohio State and no-one else.
They will still bend the rules in their favor, because that is what they do and the blind that they lead will still follow.
What's in it for the students?

The BCS is not just the dumbest thing in sports, it's possibly the dumbest thing ever invented by human beings.
