Leslie Rubinkowski had never run a mile in her life when she watched runners passing through Oakland last May during the Pittsburgh Marathon and wondered: Could I do that? This blog will track the answer to that question. Over the next 19 weeks, she will seek advice from experts, explore issues that runners face - from nutrition to motivation to footwear to music - and write about all of it while running a minimum of 25 miles a week. Her account will culminate in the Pittsburgh Marathon on May 15.

21 Days to Marathon

Friday: Off

Today’s run:

3:54:44

20 miles

Average pace: 11:12 minute/mile

Starting this morning, freshly stretched and girded with the water belt of 10,000 indignities, a man passed me and smiled.

Gettin’ ready to do it? he said.

Yeah, I said.

What you gonna do, he said, a couple of miles?

Twenty, I said.

Twenty?! he cried as I started off down Fifth Avenue.

Yeah, chief.  That’s exactly what I thought.

My left knee feels kicked by cleats and my feet seem to think I jogged the last two miles over hot coals, but otherwise I've never felt better.  Could be the self-medication.
